8e étape de la 35e édition des Mardis cyclistes

UNE PREMIÈRE VICTOIRE POUR LAMBERT-LEMAY

Montréal, le mardi 31 juillet 2012 – Simon Lambert-Lemay (SpiderTech) a remporté avec brio sa première victoire en 2012 lors de la huitième étape de la saison des Mardis cyclistes.

Lambert-Lemay a ainsi procuré à la formation SpiderTech un premier triomphe en près de deux mois, après la victoire de Hugo Houle le 4 juin dernier.

L’athlète de 22 ans de St-Ours (près de Sorel-Tracy) a lancé une fulgurante attaque au 12e passage, tout juste après un sprint intermédiaire. DominicChalifoux (Trek-Bontrager) et Pierrick Naud (Ekoï-Gaspésien) l’ont vu venir et ont su tenir sa roue.

Contre toute attente, le trio en échappée a augmenté son avance de tour en tour, et a franchi la ligne d’arrivée avec 64 secondes de priorité sur le peloton principal.

La pluie a rendu la chaussée glissante lors des dernières minutes de l’épreuve. Fin renard, Lambert-Lemay en a profité pour lancer un sprint précoce, tout juste avant le dernier virage. Il a pris ses partenaires d’échappée par surprise et a vogué vers la victoire. Chalifoux et Naud ont suivi dans l’ordre.

«J’ai attaqué quelques fois dans les derniers tours sans pour autant réussir à les décramper. De toute façon, j’étais dans une très bonne forme et je savais que mes chances étaient excellentes au sprint», a expliqué Lambert-Lemay, après avoir signé sa deuxième victoire en carrière dans la catégorie Pro-Élite.

On était également bien heureux dans le clan Chalifoux, qui a récolté un deuxième podium consécutif aux Mardis et qui est monté au quatrième rang du classement général en vertu de ses nombreux points accumulés.

«Je suis bien content! On est allés chercher un paquet de points aujourd’hui lors des sprints intermédiaires. Pour ce qui est du final, Simon est parti de loin. Comme la chaussée était glissante, je n’ai pas été en mesure de réagir rapidement et de le rattraper», a lancé Chalifoux.

Meilleurs du peloton, l’Ontarien Stephen Keeping (Steven Racing) et le champion national de Trinidad-et-Tobago Emile Abraham ont complété le top-5.

Le maillot jaune Jean-François Laroche (Fantino), Martin Gilbert (SpiderTech) et Jean-Samuel Deshaies, deuxième au classement général, ont respectivement pris les 6e, 7e et 8e places de cette huitième étape de la saison.

Le champion national du critérium des États-Unis, Adam Farabaugh a également disputé l’épreuve, sans toutefois finir dans le top-10.

«C’est la première fois que je participe à une course aussi excitante un mardi soir, a indiqué le champion américain. L’épreuve est rapide et le calibre très élevé.»

Au total, 81 coureurs ont participé à la course disputée à une vitesse moyenne de 47,3 km/h.

La neuvième étape de la saison sera présentée le mardi 7 août prochain, à 19h.

July 31, 2012 (Lachine, QC) - Simon Lambert-Lemay (SpiderTech p/b C10) took this evening’s stage with brio at the Mardis Cyclistes presented by Jean Coutu bike races. He was followed across the finish by Dominic Chalifoux (Trek-Bontrager) and Pierrick Naud (Ekoï-Gaspésien)

Lambert-Lemay, 22, attacked on the 12th of 31 laps in the 50km criterium, just after an intermediate sprint. Chalifoux and Naud jumped on his wheel then and broke away from the pack of 81 cyclists. The three stayed out well in front for the rest of the race, finishing some 64 seconds ahead of the peloton.

Lambert-Lemay took advantage of slippery conditions caused by increasing rain to launch his final sprint just before the final 90 degree corner, a manoeuvre that caught his breakaway companions off guard.

“I attacked a few times before being able to lose those two guys. I knew I was in fine form and would probably pull ahead on the sprint,” Lambert-Lemay explained afterward.

Stephen Keeping (Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery) finished fourth overall and first in the peloton. Visiting Trinidad and Tobago criterium champion, Emile Abraham (independent) finished fifth. Also present in the field was reining U.S. elite criterium champion, Adam Farabaugh who just signed with the Ekoi-Gaspesien team for the remainder of the 2012 season. Farabaugh of Oswego, NY, finished in the pack.

In terms of general classification, it is still Jean-Francois Laroche (Fantino Mondello-Cycle Régis) in yellow, leading with 661 points, well ahead of Jean-Samuel Deshaies (Ekoi-Gaspesien) with 572. Keeping is in third with 496 points now.

Among the women, it was yet another victory for Elisabeth Albert (Rocky Mountain Forget Aubin), followed by Anne-Marie Morin (Specialized-Mazda-SGC) in second and Ruth McLean (Powerwatts FITTIME) in third. Albert now has a massive 419 points; almost double that of second-place Catherine Couture (independent) with 244. But Albert might find the next two stages more difficult that the Specialized team is back from Europe.

There are two more stages left to go in the 10-stage Tuesday evening series; the next race is August 7 and the grand finale is August 14 around LaSalle Park in Lachine.
