10e étape de la 35e édition des Mardis cyclistes
UNE 2E VICTOIRE POUR NAUD ET UN 5E TITRE POUR LAROCHE

Montréal, le mardi 14 août 2012 – La grande finale de la saison 2012 des
Mardis cyclistes de Lachine s’est soldée par une deuxième victoire
spectaculaire pour Pierrick Naud (Ekoï) et un cinquième championnat en carrière
pour Jean-François Laroche (Fantino-Régis).
L’épreuve de 50 km a débuté sur les chapeaux de roue alors que quatre
coureurs se sont détachés du peloton au 13e passage sur 31.
Le groupe formé de Jean-Michel Lachance (Latino), Émile Jean (Ekoï),
Olivier Miclette (Ultraviolet), et Joel Desgreniers (Sportically) a rapidement
pris une quinzaine d’avance sur le reste de ses adversaires.
Jean-Michel Lachance en a profité pour engranger un maximum de points de
passage, dans le but de mettre la main sur le maillot de l’athlète le plus
combatif de la saison.
Le quatuor a si bien performé qu’on y a cru jusqu’à la toute fin. Les
fuyards ont finalement été rejoints avec moins de deux tours à faire. La
dixième et dernière étape allait donc se jouer dans un massif sprint de
peloton.
Pierrick Naud a devancé ses 83 adversaires en croisant la ligne
d’arrivée en premier grâce à une vitesse moyenne de 49,2 km/h.
L’athlète de 21 ans a ainsi mis la main sur la Coupe de l’arrondissement
Lachine, remise au vainqueur de la grande finale.
William Goodfellow (McGill) et Erik Lyman (Prud’Homme) ont surpris en
complétant le podium de cette épreuve finale.
«L’objectif était de faire une pierre deux coups, c’est-à-dire faire
partie de l’échappée victorieuse et de prendre le titre du plus combatif», a
admis Lachance après l’épreuve. Il aura offert un grand spectacle aux milliers
d’amateurs présents, mais aura finalement échoué dans ses deux tentatives.
Un cinquième championnat pour Laroche
De son côté, Jean-François Laroche a consolidé son championnat en
prenant la quatrième position, tout juste devant son plus proche rival,
Jean-Samuel Deshaies.
«C’est une autre grande soirée pour nous. Je tiens à remercier mes
coéquipiers, qui ont été durant toute l’année concentrés sur un seul objectif,
le championnat. Cette grande synergie, nous sommes les seuls à l’avoir», a
déclaré l’athlète de 32 ans, félicité de tous les côtés.
Jean-Samuel Deshaies s’est dit satisfait de son deuxième rang au
classement général. «Nous sommes allés chercher trois victoires cette année et
la deuxième place. C’est assez satisfaisant. Pour l’emporter aujourd’hui, il
aurait fallu une chute de Jean-François. Les chances étaient minces», a indiqué
le prometteur athlète de 20 ans.
Dominic Chalifoux, grâce à une très belle course (sixième position),
s’est hissé au troisième rang du cumulatif, quatre petits points devant
l’Ontarien Stephen Keeping (Steven), qui est donc éjecté du podium final.
«Je suis extrêmement content. Je n’avais qu’un seul objectif ce soir,
c’était de devancer Stephen. Mes équipiers ont fait tout un travail pour
m’épauler et ça a fait toute la différence», a-t-il lancé avec un large sourire
aux lèvres.
Hugues Lapointe (plus combatif), Erik Lyman (meilleur maître) et Hendrik
Pineda (meilleur junior) ont également célébré mardi soir.
Courses espoirs
Vincent Waddell (Espoirs Laval) a de son côté remporté le championnat de
la course des jeunes, tandis qu’Elisabeth Albert (Rocky Mountain) l’a emporté
du côté des femmes.
Finalement, Thierry Kirouac-Marcassa (André Cycle) et Stéphanie Dumont
(André Cycle) sont les champions des catégories minimes.

Laroche
takes fifth season title
August 15,
2012 (Lachine, QC) - Pierrick Naud (Ekoi.Com-Gaspesien) won the tenth and final
stage of the senior men’s Mardis Lachine presented by Jean Coutu road bicycle
races last evening. Naud stopped the clock at 1:00:53 in the 50km race around LaSalle Park Lachine
For Naud, it
was his second consecutive stage victory and he also picked up the Lachine Cup
for this win. At press time there was some confusion as to who finished second
with Maxime Vives (Garneau-Quebecor) standing on the podium for the awards
ceremony but official results gave it to William Goodfellow (Mc Gill Cycling). Erik
Lyman (Prud'Homme - IGA Ste Martine) came in third.
But the
overall winner of the 10-stage 2012 season was Jean Francois Laroche (Fantino
Mondello-Cycle Régis) who captured the Mardis Cyclistes Jean Coutu Senior Men’s
Cup, his fifth season title.
“This is a
great evening for us. I want to thank my teammates who have been focused all
season on winning this championship. We are the only team here to have such
great synergy,” declared Laroche, a 32-year-old lawyer who delights in beating
pro cyclists.
The second
place Specialized red jersey for the 2012 season went to Jean-Samuel Deshaies
(Ekoi-Gaspesien) while the third place green Desjardins jersey went to Dominic
Chalifoux (Trek Bontrager). Chalifoux barely squeezed Stephen Keeping (Steven’s
Racing p/b The Cyclery) out of third spot by only four points in the GC.
Hugues
Lapointe picked up the black jersey for being the most competitive cyclist,
Erik Lyman was recognized for being the best master’s cyclist while Hendrik
Pineda picked up the jersey for being the best junior rider. But because Pineda
is presently racing in Belgium
But the
biggest applause of the evening was reserved for Pierre Olivier Boily who
retired last evening from semi-pro cycling after 12 years on Laroche’s team.
Boily also rides for the Canadian para-cycling team, acting as a (seeing) tandem
pilot for blind cyclists. At the Mardis, Boily has been Fantino’s secret
weapon, superbly drafting for Laroche up to the final sprint. As the ceremony
winded down, Boily invited everybody over to the Fantino tent where he promised
celebrations would continue with music and dancing.
“Now I will
have a little more time to make beer,” explained Boily, 30, who is the owner of
the micro-brewery, Siboire. “I will also be able to spend more time with my
girlfriend. Maybe I will still compete in a few races, but not with a team.”
Some 84
cyclists crowded the start line at the senior men’s race where the start gun
was fired by actress and animator Chantal Lacroix. Weather conditions were
muggy, but the pavement stayed dry.
Among the
women, Elisabeth Albert (Rocky Mountain Forget Aubin) won a phenomenal sixth
stage victory in the ten-stage series. This is very impressive because Albert
had no team members to support her all season. “Apart from the Mardis, I
enjoyed the Gatineau U.S.A.
In last
evening’s stage race, Veronique Drapeau-Zgoralski (Specialized-Mazda-SGC)
finished second while Rosalie Cardin-Houde (IAMGOLD) finished third. There were
36 women in last evening’s race.
Albert was
also the clear winner in taking the women’s Jean Coutu Cup season title. But it
was a tight race for the second place red Specialized Cup jersey where Ruth
Mclean (Powerwatts- FITTIME) edged Catherine Couture (independent) by a mere
seven points for the Specialized red jersey. This meant Couture ended up with
the third place Desjardins green jersey as a consolation prize. Couture
regretted taking the last corner on the outside and having to dodge spectators
crowding onto the race course, something that cost her precious fractions of a
second.
The awards
ceremony saw water fights with champagne against a backdrop of fireworks. Event
organizer, Joseph ‘Tino’ Rossi gave an animated performance even after being
doused with buckets of ice water. Lachine borough mayor Claude Dauphin
congratulated Rossi, now 73, on his fine work and joked that Rossi promised to
be there for another 35 years.
