Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello-Cycle Régis) took another page from the
Mardis Cyclistes history books as he raised his arm in yet another victory
salute against a stacked field including David Veilleux (Europcar) and
SpiderTech p/b C10′s Martin Gilbert and Hugo Houle. Conditions were dry and not
too humid as Jordan Brochu (Ekoï-Gaspésien) landed on the podium in second
while Maxime Vivès (Garneau-Quebecor) was third…

LAROCHE REMPORTE LA 3e COURSE
LA PLUS RAPIDE DE L’HISTOIRE
Montréal, le mardi 10 juillet 2012 – La crème des cyclistes québécois
évoluant à l’échelle internationale était réunie à l’occasion de la 6e étape de
la saison des Mardis cyclistes Jean Coutu de Lachine.
Le recordman Guillaume Boivin (50,9 km/h) et ses coéquipiers Hugo Houle,
Martin Gilbert, François Parisien et Simon Lambert-Lemay, membres de la
formation professionnelle continentale SpiderTech s’étaient donnés rendez-vous
afin d’établir une nouvelle marque. Ils étaient pour l’occasion accompagnés de
David Veilleux, ce même coureur qui est passé bien près de participer au Tour
de France au sein de l’équipe Europcar.
Tout ce beau monde a entamé l’épreuve de 50 km avec une seule idée en
tête : battre le record du parcours. Dès les premiers passages, la vitesse
était telle que plusieurs n’ont pu tenir le coup.
Peu après la mi-course, cette vitesse a également eu raison des plus
costauds, qui n’ont eu d’autre choix que de ralentir la cadence. Le record
n’était alors plus dans les plans.
La course s’est donc jouée dans un massif sprint de peloton, qui fut
remporté par nul autre que Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello).
Celui-ci a ainsi signé une deuxième victoire consécutive, grâce à une
vitesse moyenne de 49,5 km/h, ce qui représente la troisième course la plus
rapide en 35 ans d’histoire des Mardis cyclistes. Jordan Brochu
(Ekoï-Gaspésien) et Maxime Vivès (Garneau-Québecor) ont complété le podium.
«Mes coéquipiers ont encore une fois fait du très bon travail. Ils ont
chassé toutes les échappées et lors du dernier tour, je n’ai eu qu’à prendre la
roue de P.-O. (Pierre-Olivier Boily) pour l’emporter», a souligné Laroche,
nouveau détenteur du maillot jaune.
«Le résultat de cette course démontre encore une fois que de très bons
amateurs peuvent avoir le dessus sur des professionnels. Ils n’aiment pas qu’on
leur rappelle, mais c’est la réalité. C’est leur métier et nous, on les bat», a
poursuivi Boily, faisant référence aux décevantes cinquième, septième et
neuvième places de David Veilleux, Martin Gilbert et Hugo Houle.
Le recordman de l’épreuve, Guillaume Boivin, a admis que son équipe
avait pris la tâche à la légère. Ils espéraient mettre la main sur la bourse du
record de 13 000 $, mais ce sera pour une autre fois. Quand? On ne sait trop.
«On est partis un peu trop vite. Le record du parcours, c’est quelque chose
qui se prépare d’avance plutôt que sur un coup de tête. Les conditions
n’étaient pas nécessairement toutes réunies. Oui il faisait chaud, mais il y
avait un peu trop de vent», a-t-il déploré après la course.
Le promoteur de la classique lachinoise, Tino Rossi, s’est dit déçu de
la tournure des événements. «Des athlètes professionnels sont venus ici dans le
but de battre le record, mais ils sont partis trop rapidement, ils ont coupé
les jambes du peloton et n’ont pas pu profiter de leur apport», a-t-il analysé.
La septième étape du calendrier sera présentée le mardi 17 juillet
prochain. La bourse du record sera alors majorée de 500$, pour atteindre 13
500$.

Laroche wins with
third fastest time in 35 years
July 10, 2012
(Lachine, QC) – Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello-Cycle Régis) won the
sixth stage of the Mardis Cyclistes presented by Jean Coutu bicycle races in
Lachine with a blistering time of 1:00:31 over the 50km circuit. It was the
third fastest time ever achieved in the 35 years of the Mardis where the record
stands at 58 minutes and 52 seconds on August
11, 2009 . Jordan Brochu (Ekoi-Gaspesien) came in second this
evening, followed by Maxime Vives (Garneau-Quebecor) in third.
Dry pavement, low
humidity and light winds were perfect conditions for breaking the speed record
this evening and many big names were among the 97 riders on the start line,
hungry for the $13,000 in prize monies should the record be broken. Course
record holder Guillaume Boivin (Spidertech p/b C10) and his team mates Martin
Gilbert, Hugo Houle, Simon Lambert-Lemay, and François Parisien were there.
Also present was David Veilleux (Europcar). All of these cyclists are
professionals who have much experience racing in Europe ; in fact until two
weeks ago it looked like Veilleux would be selected to represent his team at
the Tour de France.
“My team mates
again did a great job!” exclaimed Laroche after his stage win. “They chased
down the breakaways and, for the last lap, all I had to do was stay behind the
wheel of Pierre-Olivier Boily until the final sprint in order to win.” With
this evening’s win, Laroche now leads the series with 538 points versus 513 for
second-place Jean Samuel Deshaies (Ekoi-Gaspesien). Laroche will thus wear the
yellow jersey next Tuesday to show that he is now the man to beat with four
stages to go until the grand finale on August 14.
“It is amazing that
amateurs like us can beat the pros like Boivin, Gilbert, and Veilleux!”
remarked Boily who owns a brewery; Laroche works as a lawyer.
“We started off a little too fast,” offered Boivin to explain his team’s
disappointing performance. “The weather was hot and the winds were a bit too
strong to break the record.” His team mate, Martin Gilbert offered that
Spidertech is taking it easy coming off the recent national championships and
considers the Mardis to be more of a training ride. He said the team will be
going to Europe in two weeks, come back for the GP
Cycliste WorldTour races in Quebec City Montreal Europe until October.
Among the women, it
was Elisabeth Albert (Rocky Mountain Forget Aubin) who won the stage this
evening, followed by Adrianne Provost (Steven’s Cycling p/b the Cyclery) in
second and Ruth McLean (Powerwatts FITTIME) in third. The Specialized Mazda
team is away in Europe for two weeks, leaving a field of only
seven women in Lachine
