7e étape de
la 35e édition des Mardis cyclistes
UN TOUR DU
CHAPEAU POUR LAROCHE

Montréal, le mardi 17 juillet 2012 – Jean-François Laroche (Fantino
Mondello) a confirmé sa suprématie de sprinter en remportant une troisième
étape consécutive aux Mardis cyclistes Jean Coutu de Lachine.
Au total, 59 coureurs amateurs et professionnels ont bataillé pour la
victoire lors de cette 7e épreuve du calendrier. Au final, c’est encore une
fois le meilleur finisseur du lot qui l’a emporté, soit Jean-François Laroche.
Le détenteur du maillot jaune de leader a remporté le critérium de 50 km
grâce à une vitesse moyenne de 46,4 km/h sur une chaussée quelque peu
glissante. Heureusement, aucun orage n’a compliqué la course.
Dominic Chalifoux et l’Ontarien Stephen Keeping sont également montés
sur le podium de cette 7e étape. Des noms bien connus, ceux de Bruno Langlois
(Garneau-Québecor), Hugues Lapointe (Cycle Néron), Martin Gilbert (SpiderTech)
et Jean-Samuel Deshaies (Ekoï-Gaspésien) ont complété l’épreuve à l’avant.
La bière coulait à flots dans le camp de Jean-François Laroche après la
course. «Le début a été particulièrement difficile en raison des échappées,
mais on a su reprendre notre rythme au fil de l’épreuve. Dans le dernier tour,
on a encore une fois remonté tout le monde pour l’emporter assez facilement», a
commenté Laroche, entre plusieurs félicitations de ses proches et de ses
coéquipiers.
Cette troisième victoire de suite lui permet d’accroître son avance au
sommet du classement général. Il détient dorénavant 661 points, contre 572 pour
Jean-Samuel Deshaies, son plus proche poursuivant.
L’épreuve a également été concluante pour Dominic Chalifoux, qui a
consolidé son sixième rang au général grâce à son meilleur résultat en
carrière, une deuxième place. «C’est une excellente course, une belle soirée
qui se termine très bien avec mon deuxième podium à vie. J’ai laissé beaucoup
d’énergie durant les échappées. Jean-François avait plus de jus que moi au
final», a-t-il commenté.
Lors de l’avant-dernier passage, le champion canadien des moins de 23
ans Antoine Duchesne (Garneau-Québecor) a bien tenté de prendre la fuite, mais
il s’est finalement fait rejoint par le peloton.
François Parisien (SpiderTech) et Rémi Pelletier-Roy (Garneau-Québecor)
ont animé la course alors qu’ils sont demeurés seuls en tête durant 17 tours,
soit plus de la moitié de la soirée.
Notons que la semaine prochaine, le 24 juillet, les Mardis cyclistes
feront relâche. La huitième étape de la saison sera donc présentée le mardi 31
juillet. Les coureurs profiteront de ce repos pour faire le plein d’énergie en
vue du dernier droit du calendrier.

Laroche pulls off hat-trick
“The race started off poorly
for us because of the breakaways,” explained Jean-François Laroche at the
finish. “But we picked up our rhythm as things went on. On the last lap, we
lapped everybody to easily take this evening’s stage. My team mates played
their parts very well. My lead-out, Pierre-Olivier Boily and I timed the last
sprint perfectly.” Laroche was already leading the GC in the 10-stage series,
and this evening’s win puts him at 661 points, well ahead of nearest rival,
Jean-Samuel Deshaies (EKOI-Gaspesien).
François Parisien (SpiderTech
p/b C10) and Rémi Pelletier-Roy (Garneau-Québecor) put on a two-man breakaway
show for the crowd, staying out in front for 17 of 31 laps. Neither cyclist
finished the race, however. "I’m just here to practice for upcoming
European races," quipped Parisien. Pelletier-Roy spoke about this weekend’s
Tour de la Monteregie which he is still leading, but suggested that Sunday’s
race will be tough. “And I won’t have a lot of team mates there to support me…”
Antoine Duchesne
(Garneau-Québecor), the reigning U23 road champ, also rode solo out in front
for a lap before being swallowed by the pack with one lap to go. The senior
men’s race saw 59 cyclists bunched on the start line and rain held off although
the pavement was not quite dry.
The start gun this evening
was fired by Denis Coderre, the popular Liberal Member of Parliament for
Bourassa. Coderre noted that this is not the first time he has been at the
Mardis races, “I previously attended the bike races here as Minister of
Sports.”
Among the women, it was a
carbon copy of last week with Elisabeth Albert (Rocky Mountain Forget Aubin)
winning the stage this evening, followed by Adrianne Provost (Steven’s Cycling
p/b the Cyclery) in second and Ruth McLean (Powerwatts FITTIME) in third.
Albert leads the series with 364 points now, well ahead of second place Catherine
Couture (independent) with 254. Couture took a spill on the last lap, going
down with, “about five of the guys. I’m glad to be wearing a dress now to hide
the road rash. And I’m surprised to still be in wearing the [second place]
jersey after my crash.”
The Mardis take a break next
week and the cyclists won’t be back until Tuesday, July 31 for the evening race
around LaSalle Park Lachine
